Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) 3D printing technology has been invented by Stratasys. FDM 3D printers use a thermoplastic filament that is heated and then extruded layer by layer to create a 3D dimensional object. FDM 3D printers work by extruding a thermoplastic polymer through a heated nozzle which gets deposited on a building stage. Since thermoplastics can endure heat, chemicals and mechanical stress, objects made from these are ideal for testing purposes.
The most common printing material for FDM is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), but some FDM 3D printers also use polycarbonates or polyetherimide (PEI). Because they are robust, 3D FDM printers are popular in industries that include automobile and consumer goods manufacturing.
